Knowing how your tattoo artist maps your brows really makes a difference, and it's something you should consider when choosing your brow artist. There are tons of methods and tools for brow mapping, and while there's no absolute right or wrong way, there's ONE THING we should always avoid:
DO NOT MAP YOUR BROWS WHEN LYING DOWN
I've seen many uneven brows done by other artists, and while a lot of them are perfectly shaped, one side often ends up higher than the other. Why? When I ask clients with crooked brows if their brows were mapped while lying down, they usually say yes. When I map their brows while they're upright and then have them lie down, their original shape actually looks levelled and perfect. But let's be real, no one’s going to look at you while you’re staring at the ceiling except maybe your partner!
Mapping brows in an upright position is crucial for achieving a symmetrical and flattering look. Here’s why:
Gravity's Effect Gravity affects how your facial muscles and skin sit. When you lie down, your facial muscles relax differently than when you're sitting or standing, which can change how your brows look.
Realistic Perspective In an upright position, you see how your brows will look in everyday situations—whether you're sitting, standing, or interacting with others. This perspective ensures the brows are tailored to how they will appear most of the time.
Convenience and Comfort Mapping brows in an upright position avoids the need to constantly switch between lying down and sitting up to check for symmetry. This is especially important for elderly clients or those with back issues, as repeatedly changing positions can be uncomfortable or challenging.
